Sachsenhausen Camp, just outside Berlin, was a World War II concentration camp under the Nazis . This camp was one of the earliest that was set up by the regime and principally contained political prisoners. Like most other concentration camps, Sachsenhausen was in operation from 1936 right up to the time it was liberated in 1945, thus a part of history that must always be taught.

The Origins of Sachsenhausen

Originally Sachsenhausen was designed for political prisoners, mainly those who were against the Nazi regime: communists, social democrats ,etc. Later it was a concentration camp for other criminals such as Jews, homosexuals, Jehovah’s witnesses, and prisoners of war.

The camp was supposed to maintain a spirit of domination and terror among the prisoners. KZ had a complex set of the cabins for the prisoners, watch towers, administrative offices and even a prison inside the walls of the camp. It was conveniently situated towards Berlin, which made it convenient for high-level Nazi officers to visit it.

Living Conditions

Conditions in Sachsenhausen were rather terrible. They had poor diet, received regular beating and were forced to work. The accommodation was crowded, and offered little shelter from the climatic conditions, and sanitation were scarce.

For example prisoners had to obey strict discipline and they spent most of their time working under duress. Most of the people would die of hunger, sickness, or they would be killed and used as specimens in experiments carried out by the camp’s physicians.

Significance of Sachsenhausen

Sachsenhausen is symbolic of holocaust and the misdeeds of the Nazi party. The camp’s visit shows visitors how hatred, discriminations, and totalitarianisms affect future generations.
